Cub Watch No.2 & Bridge

With apologies to any of my friends who might be White Sox fans, but the Chicago Cubs snuck into first place last night with a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have played great ball since early June and have never lost more than 2 games in a row in that stretch. They also find new ways to win.

Last night they won when the Philly pitcher threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The Cubs have won mostly by playing small ball and not relying on home runs and extra base hits. Their leading home run hitter only has 18 for the year so far.

The team sort of reminds me of the 1969 Mets. They also relied on small ball and good fundamental baseball. Seems like manager Piniella has taught the Cubbies how to play good, basic baseball. It should help them in the long run.

On a personal note, I was sorry to hear of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis last evening. It is indeed a tragedy. It should make us aware of the bridge system in the U.S. It needs to be updated, as if we don’t have enough worries already.
